Dog Rescue
"Princess" crossed our path at a most inopportune time. It was Saturday evening around 6:30 p.m. and we were in a hurry to get home to watch the Broncos/Patriots playoff game. "Princess" had other plans for our evening. A small, white, somewhat matted fluff of a dog stood in our way....literally. Lisa and I looked at each other and had the "should we stop, she probably lives right around here, why tonight, what if it was one of our dogs" conversation and pulled over. To see me try to befriend a stray/strange dog must be quite something, and my description could not do it justice, but suffice it to say that I coaxed the dog over to me. She crawled on her belly the last 15 feet. I observed that she had no collar, and therefore, no tags. I picked her up and she seemed okay with that. We began knocking on doors. Why, I don't know. It's just something we do. Most people these days don't even know their neighbors, let alone their neighbors pets, but we tried anyway. No luck. We then decided to put her in the car and drive around looking for posters searching for lost dogs. No luck. We did spy some posters offering a $1000.00 reward for the return of some other dog...but not this dog. It's never "this" dog. I took to calling her "Bronco" as I had already missed kick-off, and at this point it looked like I was going to miss a lot more. No collar, no tags, no posters, no owner....but still "this" dog. We decided that bringing her home was risky (given our three large dogs and their sometimes unpredictable behavior) and it was time to enlist the help of a friend. We knew that it was unlikely that any of the shelters would be open until Tuesday, so we were looking for respite until that time. Christy came through and offered her home until Tuesday, but she was still shopping and couldn't take her right now. We decided to kill the time by driving around one more time and this time to the street behind where we found her. That end of the block was dark and it didn't look hopeful, but Lisa went up to the door while "Bronco" and I waited in the car. After a long while, a woman answered the door in a towel and informed us that she had "miniature schnauzers" and one of them was white. I brought "Bronco" to the door and "Princess" was reunited with her owner. I made it home before half time and the Broncos went on to win the game. Mission Accomplished.

I hope if my dogs are ever out that you are in the neighborhood. I am glad I am not the only person that ends up with too many dogs all in the name of rescue.
Sometimes, ever more rarely it seems, things just work out! It's wonderful when it happens, isn't it?
